Premier jour de la séance photos de Marilyn Monroe avec le photographe Philippe Halsman fin janvier 1952 chez elle, dans son appartement au Beverly Carlton Hotel pour Life Magazine (voir Life 7 avril 1952 ).
Pour cette deuxième séance photos, Philippe Halsman est accompagné de son assistant John Baird, du publicitaire de Life Stanley Flink, et d'Harold Lloyd qui, invité par Halsman, va photographier les coulisses de la séance à travers des photographies en couleur et en 3 dimensions.

First day of Marilyn Monroe's photoshoot with photographer Philippe Halsman end of January 1952 at her home, in her apartment at the Beverly Carlton Hotel for Life Magazine (see Life 7 avril 1952 ).
For this second photoshoot, Philippe Halsman is accompanied by his assistant John Baird, Life's publicist Stanley Flink, and Harold Lloyd who, invited by Halsman, photograph the backstage of the shoot through color photographs and in 3 dimensions.

Negligee Sitting

Après avoir photographié Marilyn en robe blanche (voir la séance En robe blanche ), Philippe Halsman s'attèle à une autre mise en situation pour Marilyn: la photographier habillée en lingerie. Convenu à l'avance avec Marilyn et son publicitaire de la Fox Roy Craft, ce dernier avait fait parvenir une dizaine de déshabillés chez Marilyn. C'est Halsman qui sélectionne les tenues puis il réfléchit au lieu où il placera Marilyn.

After having photographed Marilyn in a white dress (see the session In White Dress ), Philippe Halsman tackles another scenario for Marilyn: photographing her dressed in lingerie. Agreed in advance with Marilyn and her Fox advertiser Roy Craft, the latter had sent about ten negligee to Marilyn. It is Halsman who selects the outfits then he thinks about where he will place Marilyn.

Philippe Halsman racontera (dans le magazine Photography de juin 1953 ) comment il a trouvé ses idées et ses impressions: "Ma curiosité a été éveillée par la seule photographie dans la pièce. À ma grande surprise, j'ai reconnu le visage d'Eleonora Duse. Marilyn a-t-elle affiché cette image juste pour impressionner les intellectuels itinérants ? J'ai posé quelques questions et j'ai été surpris de découvrir que Marilyn en savait non seulement beaucoup sur elle, mais que la Divine Duse était sa grande idole. (...) J'ai décidé d'inclure la photo de Duse. Il y avait un tourne-disque sur l'étagère. Marilyn, en déshabillé transparent, s'y adossa, écoutant avec une rêverie haletante un disque. Son derrière pointait vers le visage immortel de la Duse. Pour moi, ce n'était pas un sacrilège. C'était mon commentaire ironique sur le changement de valeurs dans notre civilisation."

Philippe Halsman will tell (in the magazine Photography de juin 1953 ) how he found his ideas and his impressions: "My curiosity was aroused by the only photograph in the room. To my surprise I recognized the face of Eleonora Duse. Did Marilyn display this picture just to impress itinerant intellectuals ? I asked a few questions and was startled to find that Marilyn not only knew a lot about her, but that the Divine Duse was her great idol. (...) I decided to include Duse's photograph. There was a record player on the bookshelf. Marilyn, in a transparent negligee, leaned against it, listening with breathless dreaminess to a record. Her derrière was pointing toward Duse's immortal face. To me it was no sacrilege. It was my ironic comment on the shift of values in our civilization."

Pink Negligee

Le photographe s'étonne aussi de l'aménagement: "Les étagères de Marilyn étaient pleines des livres les plus disparates - sur la religion, la science, l'histoire, la psychologie et les traductions de classiques français, russes et allemands. Cela aussi était surprenant et une bonne occasion de faire une image éducative. Ma photo suivante montrait la magnifique blonde, dans son déshabillé transparent, assise avec un livre sur ses genoux, travaillant avec nostalgie sur son développement intellectuel. C'était vraiment inspirant. (...) C'était la dernière photo du premier jour."

The photographer is also surprised by the layout: "Marilyn's bookshelves were full of the most disparate books -about religion, science, history, psychology, and translations of French, Russian, and German classics. That too was startling, and a good opportunity to make and educational picture. My next photograph showed the gorgeous blonde, in her transparent negligee, sitting with a book in her lap, wistfully working on her intellectual development. It was truly inspirationnal. (...) This was the last picture of the first day."

Philippe Halsman raconte: "Plus tard, entre deux interminables changements vestimentaires, elle apparut dans un négligé à demi transparant. Je la complimentai de ne pas avoir besoin de soutien-gorge. 'Mais, Phlippe', m'expliqua-t-elle, 'je vous ai déjà dit que je me bats contre la pesanteur'." 

Philippe Halsman recounts: "Later, between two endless changes of dress, she appeared in a half-transparent negligee. I complimented her on not needing a bra. 'But, Phlippe', she explained to me, 'I have already told you that I am fighting against gravity'. "

The Walk Sitting

Philippe Halsman photographie Marilyn à l'extérieur, dans les rues de Beverly Hills, près de son appartement. Il la prend d'abord en photos sur S Canon Drive, l'une des avenues donnant sur le Beverly Carlton Hotel, immortalisant ainsi sa démarche qui deviendra célèbre par le film Niagara; il racontera (dans le magazine Photography de juin 1953 ): "Le lendemain, sur notre chemin pour aller déjeuner, j'en ai profité pour photographier la marche remarquable de Marilyn, essayant de saisir son étonnante ondulation turbinoïde. Je faisais toutes les expositions, car j'avais l'impression que, rythmiquement, au sommet de sa tortilité chantante, comme me faisant un clin d'œil, mais que je manquais constamment d'attraper ce clin d'œil. Avec une caméra, cela aurait été un jeu d'enfant, mais saisir l'essence de la démarche d'un seul coup, si cela était possible, exigeait la plus grande concentration perceptive".
Stanley Flink, correspondant du magazine Life, est présent lors de la séance.

Philippe Halsman photographs Marilyn outside, in the streets of Beverly Hills, near her apartment. He first takes pictures of her on S Canon Drive, one of the avenues leading to the Beverly Carlton Hotel, thus immortalizing her walk which will become famous in the film Niagara; he will relate (in magazine Photography from June 1953 ): "The next day, on our way to lunch, I took the opportunity of photographing Marilyn's remarkable walk, trying to catch its amazing turbinoid undulation. I made any exposures, for I had the feeling that, rhythmically, at the peak of its lilting tortility, it winked at me, but that I constantly missed catching the wink. With a movie camera it would have been child's play, but to seize the essence of the walk in one shot, if it was possible at all, demanded the utmost apperceptive concentration."
Stanley Flink, a Life correspondent, is present during the sitting.

Philippe Halsman photographie ensuite Marilyn dans sa voiture, stoppée à un drive-in, dégustant un hamburger; il racontera (dans le magazine Photography de juin 1953): "Après le déjeuner, nous sommes allés dans un restaurant drive-in pour montrer que Marilyn était sexy même en mangeant."

Philippe Halsman then photographs Marilyn in her car, stopped at a drive-in, enjoying to eat a burger; he will relate (in Photography magazine in June 1953): "After lunch, we drove to a drive-in restaurant to show that Marilyn looks sexy even while eating."

- Séance de Gym -
Gym Sitting

Après avoir été en ville dans les rues de Beverly Hills ( voir la séance Démarche & Drive-In ), Philippe Halsman et Marilyn rentrent chez elle; il pense faire ici sa dernière séance photos avec elle, dans l'entrée de sa chambre qu'elle occupe au Beverly Carlton Hotel; il avait remarqué la veille en entrant chez elle les haltères au sol, sur lesquelles il avait failli trébucher, racontant: "Par terre, il y avait deux haltères. Je lui demandai si elle les utilisait. 'Oui' me répondit-elle, 'je me bats contre la pesanteur'."
La séance photos prend place, tel qu'il le racontera (dans le magazine Photography de juin 1953 ): "Nous avons emmené les flashes dans sa chambre, et avec un éclairage indirect, je l'ai photographiée en train de faire de l'exercice avec des haltères, rampant sur le sol, se tenant sur la tête et faisant des pompes et des poiriers. Je pensais que ce serait la dernière série de photos." Car finalement au moment de partir, il fera une séance improvisée de Marilyn dans les escaliers (voir la séance Entretien & Escaliers ).
Marilyn s'est ainsi vêtue simplement, d'un haut de maillot de bain éponge en forme de triangle (qu'elle a porté dans d'autres séances avec divers photographes) et d'un blue jeans (à l'époque le jeans était surtout porté pour faire du sport).

After having being in town in the streets of Beverly Hills (see the sitting Walk & Drive-In ), Philippe Halsman and Marilyn return at her  home; he plans to do his last photoshoot here with her, in the entrance to her room she occupies at the Beverly Carlton Hotel; he has noticed the day before when he entered the dumbbells on the floor, on which he has almost tripped, telling: "On the floor, there were two dumbbells. I asked her if she used them. 'Yes' she answered me,' I am fighting against gravity."
The shooting takes place, as he will relate (in magazine Photography from June 1953 ): "We took the speedlights to her room, and with indirect lighting I photographed her exercising with dumbbells, crawling on the floor, standing on her head, and doing pushups and handstands. I thought this would be the last set of pictures."
Because finally when it is time to leave, he will have an improvised session with Marilyn on the stairs (see the sitting Interview & Stairs ).
Marilyn is thus dressed simply, in a triangle-shaped terrycloth swimsuit top (which she wears in other photoshoots with various photographers) and blue jeans (at the time, jeans were mostly worn to do sports).

Interview Sitting

Philippe Halsman photographie l'approche de Marilyn face à un entretien de travail; il a cette fois-ci scénarisé la séance photos, tel qu'on le découvre par ses annotations sur chacun d'entre elles, découpées ainsi en différentes phases: 1- Approche , 2- Plongée du bassin vers l'ennemi, 3/4- Prise de positions de combat, 5- Plastron, 6- Attaque, 7- Assaut final.
Le conseil de Marilyn paru dans l'article de Life: "Il n'est pas nécessaire d'utiliser votre voix d'une manière particulière. Si vous pensez à quelque chose de sexy, la voix va naturellement de pair."

Philippe Halsman photographs Marilyn's approach to a job interview; this time he scripted the photoshoot, as we can see from his annotations on each of them, divided into different phases: 1- Approach , 2- Pelvis thrust at the enemy, 3/4- Taking battle positions, 5- Breastwork, 6- Attack, 7- Final assault.
The Marilyn's advice published in Life article: "It isn't necessary to use your voice in any special way. if you think something sexy, the voice just naturally goes along."

Stairs Sitting

Ayant terminé ses séances photos avec Marilyn, le photographe (accompagné de son assistant John Baird et de Stanley Flink, éditeur de Life) s'en vont. En partant, Marilyn se penche dans les escaliers pour le saluer; Halsman racontera (dans le magazine Photography de juin 1953 ): "Nous avons remballé notre équipement et l'avons transporté dans les escaliers. Levant les yeux, j'ai vu Marilyn se pencher par-dessus la balustrade pour nous voir partir. Cela ressemblait à une photographie bien composée. J'ai interpellé: "Attends !" et j'ai ouvert mon Rollei pour prendre encore deux douzaines de photos d'elle là."

Having finished his photoshoots with Marilyn, the photographer (accompanied by his assistant John Baird and editor of Life Stanley Flink) leave. When leaving, Marilyn leans down the stairs to say goodbye; Halsman will relate (in magazine Photography from June 1953 ): "We packed our equipment and carried it down the stairs. Looking up, I saw Marilyn leaning over the railing to see us off. It looked like a well-composed photograph. I called "hold it !" and opened my Rollei to take another two dozen shots of her there."
